Joyful Living

Lesson 4

4

In our previous lessons we have tried to break up many of your present conceptions of the world around us. We have strongly criticised the present religious and healing bodies. This does not mean that we have to wage a continual war in this, or any other, direction, neither do we have to adopt a self-righteous attitude to life inasmuch as we see through the great façade paraded by man. We take upon ourselves the responsibilities of being intelligent human beings – capable of setting our own house in order. Whilst we, who have written these lessons, have witnessed the power of God we still remain under the laws of living and have to practice them our self or we experience the same disturbing things as anyone else and only have our self to blame.

Not only do we have to accept the truth of the reality of life, we also have to realise that there are millions of souls in difficulty in the world of affairs. We cannot instantly snatchaway their props and the things in which they believe to be of importance to them no matter how much they suffer by them. What we have to do is to be in readiness to help them when their beliefs fall down. We have accepted our responsibilities so have no right to thwart the beliefs and opinions of others. Thus, since you have commenced these lessons we take it that you are taking matters into your own hands concerning your own life so we pass on the knowledge of our experience for your enlightenment.

You will find that you will need the great assets of tolerance and patience to win the game of life and there are many things that you will find you have to do to maintain harmony at all levels.

We will give you two examples that we have witnessed our self.

A young friend of ours had certain views on marriage. He was aware of the miserable and false set up of church marriages and was convinced that he was not going to conform. When he met his girl they lived without going through the necessary ceremony of official recognition. This continued for about two years during which time the girl’s parents were very unhappy about the whole situation and did all they could to get the girl home. After much thought and consideration the young man finally agreed to marry in spite of his own beliefs on the subject. After all, if he really loved the girl what did formalities matter either way? Harmony was then restored all round.

In another instance a young girl believed in continued life after that condition we call death so when her mother died she did not want to make a great show of misery and a false display of emotions. She did not want to wear black at the funeral – nor even send a wreath. To her death had a different meaning. When these views were presented to her relatives however, the situation took on a different picture. They became afraid for themselves – what would the neighbours think? In the same way as the aforementioned case their views had to be respected to enable harmony to reign.

These are incidents to show that our happiness is always dependant on the happiness of others. Also it goes to prove that when we act as intelligent and understanding persons our views in relation to life come to be respected.

We live in a world of our own making and whilst we receive the blessings of nature when we let her guide us she insists that we get on with finding happiness for ourselves. Some people believe that if God is all-powerful and provides for all then all we have to do is to sit back and let it happen. The folly of this attitude is only too evident in the world today. If this is really true – how can we grow to become like Him? A father does not bear his son’s responsibilities; but provides the means only whereby he can grow up himself. For example, you will find that many things in life that you would like to see done are not fulfilled until someone comes along and takes it upon himself to bring it about. It is no use dreaming about unfulfilled wishes – one must act – and by our actions we find the necessary strength and means to carry it through. This is life. It has been written that God works “through the instrumentality of man” – He gives the life and strength and we perform the deeds. This is what is meant by the statement “I work and the Father works hitherto” (Jesus) and “I and my Father are one” (Jesus). St. Paul also echoes this teaching throughout his writings.

This being true then we have infinite powers at our disposal when we work in harmony with nature. It is only when we impose our own selfish motives on what we do we create trouble for ourselves.

One of the most difficult and the most necessary virtues is that of forgiveness. It is not until we can entirely forgive others for their unpleasant actions towards us can we enter real peace.

In the light of our teachings the fact is that we most probably attracted the unpleasantness anyway. Many of us let resentfulness bar our way to harmony between these persons and try to get “our own back” in some sort of a way – perhaps by passing sarcastic remarks in their presence or by ignoring them – or by perhaps doing them a “bad” deed – in fact anything that will give a sense of justification. The truth is, in all irony, you will “get your own back” – for we reap what we sow. You will no doubt say that this is all very basic and you’ve heard it all before but we say it is precisely that and talk and argue as you may we cannot escape the law.

What is the law is the law – we did not make it. What we are trying to say is that you will not, nor cannot, nor ever will find peace, wholeness and happiness in any system in the world until you can understand the basic tenets of living.

It is the failure to understand the truth of being that is behind all sickness, poverty and wars. It is the harbouring of resentment, giving way to childish passions, anger, selfishness, greed etc. that produces sickness on the body, breaks up homes and is the root cause of war.

The body, under such unnatural stresses finally breaks down and we lead a life of misery – through, we are sorry to say, our own follies. My friends, the sayings of the great teachers are not just meaningless and idle sayings – they are potent with truth on the real facts of life.
he folly is ours for ignoring them.

If we live life correctly we have no need of special qualifications to exercise real power in the lives of others. We become the embodiment of the principles we follow and through living the pure life a channel is open between that which is false and that which is true. A person of such qualities radiates a subtle power of the spirit that influences quietly and often unnoticed the atmosphere of every place he visits. He is the witness of the workings of God. A group of people who pray for peace or other results and at the same time their lives are expressing chaos just cannot be suitable instruments to bring these results about. They are simply deceiving themselves and nobody else.

If you are trying every conceivable material means to maintain health in your body then it reveals that you are relying on diffused energies to maintain wholeness. Wholeness can only be maintained by living out the laws of wholeness in one’s actions. This means that if you lack sincerity of purpose to live life according to It’s laws and not according to the way life is in reality but according to how you think it should be lived you will never reach harmony. If you have the habit of acting dishonestly in any way at all you will never experience wholeness.

To receive the benefits of a peaceful and happy life we have to take ourselves in hand and by patient persistence transform our whole outlook and follow this up by practising what we believe. For inasmuch as we deceive life so will it deceive us. It is a two-way process. We produce the results ourselves. (This means that each one of us becomes the embodiment of those circumstances and effects according to the thoughts we entertain. This is why your life is an open book to those who understand the truth. This will become more evident as you put these teachings into practice).

This teaching might sound unreal to you – and you might dispute many of the things we say but our answer will always be the same that there is no other way for man to find the peace and freedom he seeks but by that way taught by the great teachers of any age. We will go so far as stating that when man is able to live correctly he will radiate the spiritual forces from within himself that will bring about the elimination of sickness, wars, tempests, famines, earthquakes in human occupied areas – in fact heaven will become realised on earth – as we have said – mankind creates his own sorrows. We have to accept that the truth is from the source only and NOWHERE ELSE. The teachings of pure religion contain the answers to ALL life’s problems – argue, discuss and differ as you may there will always be the few who KNOW. We know that there are those who argue about a “new truth” – a new revelation or a free society but no matter what form it may take in the world, mark this, that if it is not founded on a pure controlled life it is not the way but some concoction only.

That which is true exists whether we know about it or accept it or not. The journey from the unreal things of life to the reality is like a journey from one country to another where the laws are entirely different and you have to obey the laws of your new country and forget the others. If we seek our home in that which is permanent and real then we have to turn our backs on our old ways and ideas and go forward in sincerity and truth until we become transformed in the new life and live under entirely new patterns free from the sufferings and setbacks of the world.
